TO COMBAT ISLAMOPHOBIA

MUSLIM Institute has launched its worldwide campaign to raise awareness about hate against Islam as well as to bring the comity of nations together to play their constructive role in countering Islamophobia. The Institute holds the honour to actively conduct different activities to combat Islamophobia by bringing together Muslim and non-Muslim scholars to give their intellectual input on the issue of Islamophobia. In continuity of its efforts, MUSLIM Institute organized a Human Model of thousands of people forming “UN Thank You” shape to respect the resolution unanimously adopted by the United Nations General Assembly proclaiming 15 March as International Day to combat Islamophobia. The event was held at the Shrine of Hadrat Sultan Bahoo Jhang, Pakistan. In addition to human model, flags of fifty seven Muslim Countries were also displayed around the logo of the UN human model. The participants wore white dresses and chanted slogans “UN Thank You” and “Islam is Peace”. The event was held under the patronage of the Founding Father of MUSLIM Institute Hadrat Sultan Muhammad Ali. Chairman MUSLIM Institute and Dewan of Junagadh State Sahibzada Sultan Ahmed Ali also addressed on the occasion. A large number of people from media, civil society, and different walks of life participated in the event.

By making a human model, the people of Pakistan adopted a unique way to express their gratitude to UN for its efforts in combating Islamophobia. OIC member states especially Pakistan have played a vibrant role to raise the concern of nearly two billion Muslims and getting the resolution on Islamophobia passed in the UN General Assembly.

The growing trend of Islamophobia is very dangerous and hampering the promotion of peace in the world. Islamophobia is rampant primarily in the West and has been prevalent long before even 9/11. From the media portrayal of Muslims only as terrorists to the never-ending aggression in the Middle East to the way Muslim refugees have been treated, there has been an obvious anti-Muslim bias around the world. Hate against Islam is a bitter reality. The Muslims are often facing unlawful restraints and even in some countries, they are not allowed to choose their dress code freely. Islamophobia is appearing in different forms whether it be cultural, ideological or structural. Alarmingly islamophobia has taken the shape of militarized assaults on Muslims.

The rise of Islamophobia at global level can be understood by observing a rise in the tendencies like:

Linking Terrorism with Islam
Banning Hijab in some states
Banning Muslim refugees and immigrants in many parts of the world
Attacking Muslim worship places
Attacking Muslim families etc.

15 March, the day designated as International Day to Combat Islamophobia, has its importance as on the same day in 2019, a right-wing extremist murdered over 50 Muslims in a New Zealand terror attack on two mosques. After Christchurch Mosque incident, several Islamophobic attacks have followed across the world. This day will be annual reminder of the need to combat Islamophobia.

Multi-Ethnic and Multi-Cultural society is the need of the hour for peaceful coexistence in the modern world. However, mutual coexistence is a distant dream in a world where hate against Islam prevails.

Chairman MUSLIM Institute and Dewan of Junagadh State Sahibzada Sultan Ahmed Ali stated that a UN designated day against Islamophobia will help raise attention to and tackle the mindset that treats all Muslims as suspicious and normalizes mass violence against them. By commemorating the International Day to combat Islamophobia, it is hoped that the UN will urge member states to implement its resolution in letter and spirit. Already there are sane voices against Islamophobia by heads of the states around the world raising their concerns regarding Islamophobia which is a positive sign. Moreover OIC countries may also adopt a treaty or convention on combating Hate against Islam. Later, non-Muslim states could be encouraged to ratify the treaty.
